Archaeological investigation, conservation restoration and museum exhibition design for the Colosseum Archaeological Park

ROME – Colosseum Archaeological Park | 2024-2025

ES Srl collaborated with the Colosseum Archaeological Park on a complex intervention at the Schola Praeconum, a Roman building overlooking Via dei Cerchi and the Circus Maximus. The project, promoted by the Park and funded by the European Union under the NextGenerationEU programme (PNRR, intervention 46), pursued three objectives: to expand knowledge of the monument, conserve its surfaces and return it to public use.

The activities carried out included:

• Archaeological investigation, including the discovery of a Late Antique apsidal structure, which a possible interpretation may associate with the ancient title of San Nicola mentioned in documentary sources;
• Conservation restoration of the frescoes in the niches and the central vault, which brought to light a finely executed painted coffered ceiling;
• Creation of a ramped visitor route providing access to the renowned mosaic depicting the procession of the Praecones.

A project that reflects the commitment of the Colosseum Archaeological Park to the conservation and enhancement of one of Rome’s most historically layered monumental contexts, as well as the value of a collaboration based on integrated expertise in research, conservation and accessibility design.
