Restoration of the Roman villa in Viale degli Eroi di Cefalonia – Spinaceto – Rome

The work involved the recovery of a municipally owned area in a state of abandonment and deterioration, located in the residential district of Spinaceto in Rome, where significant remains of a Roman Imperial-period villa were preserved.

As a preliminary step, the ancient structures, which had already been uncovered during excavations in the 1980s and were, at the time of the work, literally covered by invasive vegetation, underwent thorough cleaning. A detailed survey of all the masonry surfaces was then carried out, together with a mapping of their state of conservation, on the basis of which the restoration project was developed. The intervention included the restoration of the masonry structures in opus reticulatum and opus vittatum, the construction of sacrificial wall crowns and the restoration of a floor mosaic. During the works, archaeological test excavations were also carried out in order to assess the extent and continuation of the currently exposed structures beneath the surrounding green areas owned by the municipality.

The entire area surrounding the villa was then fenced off and made available to the public.
