Archaeological excavation SS212 Fortorina – Benevento

Archaeological excavation for the construction of the SS 212 “Fortorina” between the Pietralcina junction and the San Marco dei Cavoti junction (BN)

The work involved extensive archaeological excavation of two areas in order to obtain clearance from the Superintendency for the construction of State Road No. 212 “Fortorina”. Excavation of the area near Pesco Sannita brought to light extensive remains of a production complex belonging to a Roman-period rural villa, together with a lime kiln built during the phase in which the ancient complex was being dismantled. Excavation of the area near San Marco dei Cavoti revealed remains of structures belonging to a Samnite-period sanctuary associated with the cult of water, extensive cobbled surfaces and, here too, two lime kilns built during the dismantling phase of the ancient complex.
