Open Pompeii public system

Open Pompei is the consultation system developed to share the information assets of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii with the public.

Open Pompei collects and aggregates information contained in the main management information systems used by the Park and makes it available to all users who wish to access it. Thanks to an infrastructure specifically designed for public use, descriptions, catalogue archives, historical photographs and many other types of information are freely accessible from smartphones and PCs without registration.

Its flexibility and a user location feature, available when used on a smartphone, make it particularly suitable for use within the Archaeological Park, supporting users during their visit or providing industry experts with scientific information.

The consultation interface is based on WebGIS technology but does not use traditional navigation criteria. An interactive map allows users to explore the Archaeological Site of Pompeii by clicking (or tapping) to activate progressive selections of information layers. Once a specific Domus (or cadastral unit) has been selected, users can open a detailed information sheet containing a wealth of content.

A simple search engine allows users to search for domus or directly for archaeological finds by specifying keywords and key phrases and applying more specific filters.

The system was developed exclusively using open-source technologies and features a multilayer architecture based on microservices, with a high level of redundancy to ensure good performance and service continuity. The database is hosted on an Elasticsearch database configured as a cluster, which stores both alphanumeric and geographic data.

The first release of the system was launched in September 2022, but the project is still ongoing. Several enhancements are planned, which will introduce new features and further enrich the database.
