Enhancement works on the southern ambulacra

ROME – Colosseum Archaeological Park | 2024-2026

As part of the enhancement project for the Flavian Amphitheatre, developed by Studio Boeri under the Scientific Direction of the Archaeological Superintendency, ES Progetti contributed to the redevelopment of the southern ambulacra of the Colosseum, in the section between the Stern Spur and the Valadier Spur.

The intervention involved a large area previously investigated through archaeological studies aimed at examining the original flooring and structures of the amphitheatre, with the objective of returning these spaces to public use through an accessible, clearly understandable route that respects the historical evidence.

Working as part of a Temporary Joint Venture with Ing. Mario e Paolo Cosenza S.r.l., ES Progetti contributed to the execution of the works over a period of 14 months, coordinating activities that required constant integration between archaeological protection, conservation and enhancement.

Main activities

• removal of modern paving and targeted archaeological investigations aimed at reaching the original levels of the amphitheatre;
• construction of sub-base layers using innovative and environmentally compatible materials specifically developed for the intervention;
• installation of approximately 3,000 m² of paving using large travertine slabs, produced and laid according to a dedicated design;
• enhancement and safeguarding of the preserved archaeological remains through the installation of a transparent protection system that allows visitors to observe sections of the original paving, its associated traces and the ancient foundation structures.

The intervention represents a significant example of the balance between the conservation of archaeological heritage and contemporary public use, helping to return an important section of Rome’s most iconic monument to the public.
